We have hunted bison together. The horse transported us to safe havens and is our noble friend. My people are a horse people.
We have ridden the pampas cloaked in silver, ever since the Conquistadors came. My people are a horse people.
We know that the wind of heaven is that which blows between a horse’s ears. With the horse, we have flown without wings. My people are a horse people.
We have eked out an existence in the wilderness with the help of brumbies. My people are a horse people.
We have had our horses carry bricks and princes. We have roamed the wide steppes together. My people are a horse people.
We have walked alongside the horse in the furrow or beside the wagon. We have built cities and our landscape to his scale. My people are a horse people.
To the four corners of the Earth, the horse has travelled by our side and been our partner. He is our agriculture and our architecture, our spirit, art and creation. He is our connection with sky above and the earth below. All our civilization has been borne on his back. The horse has been responsible for our sustenance and our survival. We are ALL horse people.
Yet we have waged wars with our horses. And for the past century we have waged war against our horses. We have chased them from our cities, distanced them from our homes, banished them from our fields, run them off the road, hunted them with helicopters, and shipped them to slaughterhouses.
At the same time, we have waged war against Mother Earth and against each other. We have uprooted ourselves from the earth and from our history. We have forgotten how to walk in harmony with all living things. At this time of global crisis that will impact all of us and future generations, we must all come together in prayer and in action to repair our relationship with Mother Earth and her inhabitants.
Human history is written in hoof prints. How shall we choose to write our future?
This we ask in the name of all that is, for all our relations.
