The Learning Curve #25

The learning CurveTwenty-five days into our committment of learning something new everyday for the next year. There sure has been a lot of ground covered. I am looking forward to looking back at some of these at the end of the year.

Today we introduced our Hay Drive again. It is very hard to ask for money, for most of us anyway. We also struggle with not wanting to appear needy or "in trouble" or unable to care for our horses. The truth is that there has never been any guarantees in this work except from our main supporter Sandy Walsh of the Leo Walsh Foundation. She commits $2500 a month that we use for the lease of the property. Without her support we could have never built upon our vision of creating a sustainable rescue, food production farm with education on equines, soil restoration and sustainability for the community. A community run rescue and sanctuary for horses, humans and mother earth.

Of course the horses come first on this farm. Their needs, their care. They are first and foremost and for this reason it has taken us nearly 4 yrs to begin the growing food part of our mission. We first had to establish a facility with an infra-structure that could maintain and care for 20-30 horses at any given time. We have done a great job at managing to create somethng really successful that will for sure be able to take care of itself in time.

One of our major accomplishments has been our program at UMass. All herd members should be proud of this accomplishment. We are not paid for it by the University. Justin does not get paid for his teaching either. It is funded by donations given to Blue Star for the horses. We see this program as very much for the horses. It is providing education and understanding around the use of animal power in this day and age and how really appropiate and important it is!

In this video I take you for a tour around the Hadley farm where our horses are. Mark, Bob and Ruby and April. We talk about the program and visit with the "kids". If you miss Mark or Bob or Ruby and April...you will LOVE this video!

I hope by sharing this part of our work you will have a better sense of just how much your support means!!
