SPONSOR HENNY PENNY
One of the first things people notice about Henny, aside from her dashing good looks and her perrenial mustache, is the brand on her left hip. Henny arrived at Blue Star February of 2011, after her former owner could no longer care for her, but the brand suggests that she grew up as a PMU mare. Premarin is a hormone therapy drug that was discontinued when their abusive practices, keeping pregnant mares in straight stalls with no turnout to harvest their urine, were exposed. The foals of these mares were then sent to auction (and slaughter) if they were colts, and raised to become PMU mares themselves if they were filly’s. We think Henny is too young to have been bred herself, though we cannot be sure, but we are certain she was being raised to be a broodmare for PMU. When Henny first came to Blue Star she was skittish and didn’t like equipment touching her, but with love and time, she is coming around.
Henny, with her big brown eyes and winter mustache (yes, a real mustache, curls at the end and all), is a curious girl. She hangs by the fence and watches what goes on in the barn, and every time a team goes out she is right there on the other side of the fence the whole way, clearly very interested in whatever game they are playing at. Sometimes she gets to go with them, and as the first part of her training she jogs behind the wagon pulled by the boys in the big field. She seems to think she could do a better job!
Henny is learning how to drive and ride, and would love to show you how sweet and gentle a big girl like her can be – especially if you bring her something tasty! She also gives excellent kisses.
The mustache may confuse us, but the boys in the herd have no doubts that Henny is a beautiful mare!
