Conor's Profile

Conner

SPONSOR CONOR

Conor is an approximately 18hh Gypsy Drum gelding. He is 9 years old.

Conor was imported from Ireland.  In Ireland, the spotted drafts so popular with the "gypsies"  are divided into "Gypsy Vanners" and "Gypsy Drum horses."  The main difference between the two is in size - Gypsy Vanners are smaller and more compact, usually wtih more feathering and hair than the larger Drum horses.  The Gypsy Drum horses were selected to be bigger to lead the cavalry band carrying a mounted rider with kettle drums on either side of the saddle.

Conor, a new immigrant to the United States, went to live in New York state, where he was used as a trail horse.  Unfortunately, he started coming up lame, and he was diagnosed with ring bone in his right front.  Injections have not helped him.  Because he was no longer rideable, his owners decided they could not afford a horse they could not ride.  We are going to evaluate Conor and see whether or not corrective shoeing, light exercise, or other methods might help him, as he is still quite young!

Henny Penny and Conor, a clydesdale and Irish Drum horse.Since Conor has arrived, he has made many friends with his very personable manners and friendly, sweet disposition.  Even if he turns out to be only pasture sound, he will make a great, cuddly companion horse.  We are hoping, though, that he might be suitable for work in harness - Tom Too has ring bone and arthritis, and the light work in harness has helped him greatly.

Also since Conor has arrived at Blue Star, he's been christened with a (slightly) new name!  He came with the much more anglo-americanized name "Connor," which we have since changed to the more authentically Irish "Conor" in honor of a good friend in New York City who expertly manages the Clinton Stables carriage barn.

Like all of our horses-in-residence, Conor is available for sponsorship or adoption to the right forever home.
